Founded on the site of an old Huron village that Jacques Cartier named Achelay, Portneuf is a historic region located between Quebec City and Trois-Rivières, on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River. It takes its name from the seigneury of Portneuf, an emblematic land in the history of New France.
The community developed primarily around the Saint Lawrence River and the forestry industry, with sawmills, a shipyard and a paper mill. It later split into two villages: Portneuf, along the river, and Notre-Dame-de-Portneuf, located two kilometers further north.
Since 2002, the city of Portneuf has brought the two villages together, highlighting the many natural attractions of this territory, where culture, nature and history come together. The Portneuf wharf and marina, along with historic monuments such as the Église Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs church and the Manoir de la Baronnie-de-Portneuf, are just some of the tourist sites to discover. Here, every nook and cranny tells a page of our history!
