The Maison des Jésuites de Sillery, One of Canada's Oldest Historic Buildings
The Maison des Jésuites de Sillery, built in 1730 by Jesuit missionaries wishing to evangelize the natives, is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Canada. Over the years, it has been rented out to a writer, lumber merchants and local business owners, and was even occupied by the British during the Seven Years’ War.
In 1986, the house became the property of the town of Sillery, which invested in restoring the building and turning it into the interpretation and exhibition center it is today.
During your visit, you’ll be able to:
- Observe the 3D representation of the house’s evolution over the centuries
- Visit the exhibition featuring all the artifacts discovered near the site
- Learn more about the captivating story of the unlikely encounter between Jesuits, Europeans and Aboriginals
- Discover current temporary exhibitions on First Nations culture
- Take part in summer activities
From June to September, you can visit the site free of charge from Wednesday to Sunday. Out of season, please call for the schedule.
The Hangar de Batiscan, Where Maritime History Meets Playtime
Located on the Batiscan wharf, the Hangar de Batiscan is a craft store, a maritime museum… and an escape game! In the museum area, kids can learn about maritime history, from enemy submarines to high tides, maritime traffic and the tools sailors have used over the years.
The escape game lends itself to slightly older children, who can take part in solving the riddle set in 1957.
It’s July 7, 1957. The fin of the Second World War has not brought only good. Conflits of ideology still rage, mainly between the Western camp (the United States) and the Eastern camp (the Soviets). This worries Canadians, who don’t want to experience the horrors of a nuclear war. At the same time, whispers of Soviet spies having infiltrated various levels of the Canadian government inflame the population with suspicions.
Check out the museum and gift store opening hours, or reserve your time for the family escape game!
